'It' was a disappointment, but there was a still a certain charm to 'It' that I could not help but like 'It," despite 'It's' flaws.I jumped on the Alexa Chung fan bandwagon not long before the hardcover was published, and I happened to be downtown shortly afterward where I purchased a copy of 'It.' It technically had not been released in the US just yet, but the Strand bookstore had a copy for $18.Upon first impression, the book is beautiffuly designed. Think Holly Golightly meets Nylon Magazine. Fans of older hardcovers will appreciate the fabric binding on the outside and the polka-dotted flyleaves on the inside. The minimalist cover is perfect and compelling.It's the contents of the book that matter most, though, and this is where the brilliant, cheeky, and cultured Alexa Chung falters. I'm not saying she can't write. I'm saying she would have benefited from having a strong editor to help her collect her thoughts and figure out what 'It' truly is. Is 'It' a style book? A rant on life? A memoir? A collection of musings, photos, and doodles? I suppose It's the latter, but considering how well Alexa presents her thoughts on television, I was hoping for a more cohesive book. The "hodge podge book" can be done well, when the author has a goal in mind and stays on target. Alexa did say this was a side project and that she wrote it through *emails*, so the scatterbrained nature of the book doesn't surprise me. As another reviewer (I forget where) pointed out, the lack of photo captions does make the book a little confusing. Not every photo is of Alexa. It becomes clear towards the end of the book that Alexa was running out of steam and decided to throw just about anything into the pot. If you cannot redeem a book in the latter half, you have failed.What bothers me most is that Penguin decided to publish this. I always thought of Penguin as a more prestigious, highly-esteemed publisher, but if they're willing to publish books like this, I wonder what their criteria is. Maybe we should all send manuscripts to Penguin! (Of course, Alexa's star quality probably helped her land the book deal.)Despite all of the above, I sincerely hope Alexa makes a second try at bookwriting and produces something that has better readability and more focus in terms of photo choice. Perhaps a memoir. I believe she can do it.
If you just want to pat yourself on the back for having read a book, I guess this one will do, as it won't waste much of your life, but it will waste some of it.
The girl is chic but this book is fluff.You can almost hear the editor says to her"it does not matter what the book is about,just write anything, it will sell "I am glad I only paid 5$ for it .I use it more as a decorative object than anything else.
Didn't really know what to expect from this book. I was pleasantly surprised, though. It was very unique, with dialogue, pictures and original drawings. Absolutely loved it. A must for any fan of Alexa Chung, or fashion in general.
Fun to read. I read it in one night, and sat up most of the night to do it. I enjoyed reading about how Ms. Chung developed her style, the people from whom she drew her inspiration, as well as art and films. It's more of a guide on how to develop your own sense of style, rather than a "what-to-wear" guide, so if that's what you're looking for, this isn't that type of book. However, if you want to know how to create a style that's perfect for you, and find clothing and accessories that you will enjoy wearing, this book gives you plenty of ideas about how to look for inspiration and guidance.
I really love Alexa's style and everything about her. That's why it's soooo painful for me to say that it was kind of (totally) painful to read. Take all her instagram and facebook pics and posts, print them and charge $25 for it. that's what this book is all about.
